FAQs
Answers to Questions we get asked a lot
Why Are My Teeth Sensitive?
When the gums recede, the receded gumline allows underlying dentin to show through. This dentin allows water and food to access the sensitive nerve, causing sensitivity. There are many treatments and toothpastes that can be used to treat your tooth sensitivity.
What Should I Do to Prevent Gum Disease and Tooth Decay?
Maintaining good at-home care is key to preventing tooth decay and periodontal disease. Daily brushing and flossing are helpful to care for your teeth and minimize your risk of developing gingivitis or tooth decay.
What Is Gingivitis?
Gingivitis occurs when bacteria surrounds the teeth and enters the gums. The gums become irritated and inflamed when you have gingivitis. In order to prevent periodontal disease, it is important that you maintain good at-home care and visit our dentist and team often.
What Is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease is caused by bacteria that surrounds the teeth and enters the gums. There are few symptoms initially, but when left untreated, it can cause serious damage to your mouth. Common symptoms of periodontal disease include:
- Bad breath
- Gum recession
- Gum sensitivity
- Abscesses
- Tooth pain
- Tooth loss
How Do You Treat Periodontal Disease?
If you are diagnosed with periodontal disease, it is of the utmost importance that you get immediate attention. With treatments like scaling and root planing, laser therapy and local antibiotics, we can control the condition. Typically, periodontal surgery is unnecessary and is only required for severe cases.
What Is the Difference Between a White and Silver Dental Filling?
Not only is there a visual difference between white and silver dental fillings, there also are a variety of medical differences too. Silver amalgam fillings were a popular choice for dental restorations for many years but have since become less commonly used, with white composite fillings gaining favor. Composite dental fillings are made from a composite resin that can be color matched to look just like your natural teeth.
How Can I Improve My Smile?
Through cosmetic and restorative dentistry, our team can help you enhance the beauty of your smile. Depending on your personal needs, your treatments may include:
- Teeth whitening
- Dental bonding
- Porcelain veneers
- Porcelain crowns
What Is Teeth Whitening?
Teeth whitening is a fast and easy way to enhance your smile and boost your confidence. With time, our teeth lose their luster and vibrance, and teeth whitening is a great way to improve the look of your teeth, giving them a whiter and brighter look. Beverages like coffee, tea, soda and wine can also contribute to tooth staining, but our treatments may be able to elevate your smile.
What Is Dental Bonding?
Dental bonding uses a tooth-colored composite resin material to fill in the gaps and chips on the teeth, and it can also whiten the teeth. This treatment is fast and simple, so you can leave our office looking great. Tooth-staining foods and beverages can stain and diminish the effects of the bonding.
What Are Porcelain Veneers?
Dental veneers are thin shells that are placed onto the teeth to enhance the smile. They can improve the size, shape and color of the teeth quickly and effectively. At our office, we use a porcelain veneer material that matches the natural appearance of tooth enamel and is also stain resistant.

What Are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns are a common restoration we use at our practice. They are a permanent restoration that covers the entire tooth. It can change the size, shape and color of the teeth within a few visits, and it is commonly used after a root canal treatment or a dental implant placement.
What Is a Dental Implant?
Dental implants are permanent replacements for missing teeth. The dental implant is made of titanium and is surgically placed into the jawbone to replace the missing tooth. A few months after the treatment, your dental implant will fuse with your jawbone, giving you a stable anchor for a permanent tooth replacement.
What Are the Benefits of Dental Implants?
- Dental implants look, feel and function just like your natural teeth.
- With proper care, they are a permanent solution for missing teeth.
- During your routine dental cleanings at our office, we will maintain the implant.
- An implant decreases your possibility of experiencing bone loss, periodontal disease, tooth movement and further tooth loss.
- Dental implants are fixed into the jawbone, meaning you will not need to wear a removable denture.
- A dental implant replaces the individual tooth that is missing, rather than using the surrounding teeth as an anchor for a tooth replacement, as is what happens with a dental bridge.
Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?
Most people are candidates for dental implants, but there are some exceptions or steps that need to be taken before treatment. You may be denied a dental implant if you suffer from chronic illness, heart disease or severe osteoporosis. The best way to determine if you are a candidate is to set up an appointment with our dentist and team.
What Happens During a Dental Implant Procedure?
Typically, the process of getting a dental implant takes three to four visits. During the first visit, we will take digital X-rays and impressions of your mouth to create a surgical guide and temporary prosthesis to cover your dental implant. During your next appointment, we will surgically place your dental implant post into your jawbone. A local anesthesia will be applied, and then we will make a small incision in your gums and place the implant in your jawbone. We will then cover your implant with sutures to ensure a stable period of healing. You will return to our office in about three months so that we can start creating a porcelain crown to cover your dental implant.
What Is the Cost of a Dental implant?
Dental implant costs vary greatly from dentist to dentist and patient to patient. Your cost will be influenced by the number of implants being placed, treatments that are needed prior, current state of oral health and more. To get a price range from our team, we recommend scheduling a consultation. During your consultation, we can give you a list of fees so that you know what to expect.
How Long Will My Dental Implant Last?
With proper care, a dental implant can last between 30 years to a lifetime.
